Professional mineral preparation

The Mineral Studio offers its services internationally, to whoever requires specialized preparation and treatment of mineral specimens — private collectors, museums, dealers.

The Mineral Studio constantly evolves and carries out R&D activities, investing in innovation both internally and through collaboration with universities and top-class experts. Whether it is to find new solutions to preparation challenges, mechanical approach, testing, and refining chemical treatments, or improving display technique, The Mineral Studio goes the extra mile to provide excellence to specimen preparation, regardless of the size of the specimen.

Every specimen is intrinsically unique, and it also holds an irreplaceable value for its owner, either economic or sentimental. The Mineral Studio is fully aware of it and treats all specimens with the same level of care and professionalism.

Mechanical and chemical work

01

Trimming

Trimming does not simply mean removing, cutting, or eliminating redundant material that distracts from the specimen's key features. It is a thorough mechanical process with the goal of unleashing the specimen's full potential and display what matters most.

High-quality trimming is the result of a focused vision based on hands-on experience, technical expertise, exceptional craftsmanship, and deep knowledge of materials. For each specimen, The Mineral Studio's team is called to look beyond the specimen's initial status, envisioning the final result.

One of the most distinctive features of The Mineral Studio is the investment in time to assess the specimen's characteristics. Features such as structure, fractures, and crystal stability are assessed to avoid actions that could irreversibly compromise the specimen.

Chemical cleaning

During mineral preparation, chemical cleaning plays one of the most important, often crucial roles. Depending on the specimen's history — clay, oxides, patinas, stains, coatings of secondary minerals, and organic residues, or residues from previous treatments such as oils and lacquers — controlled removal of these substances is deemed necessary to reach an optimal preparation result.

The Mineral Studio offers a specialized chemical cleaning service designed to treat every type of mineral in a targeted and safe manner. As per trimming, also in this case each sample undergoes a thorough preliminary analysis, an essential step to determine the right approach and chemically sound pathway to pursue.

Special attention is given to the most delicate or unstable minerals. Specimens sensitive to humidity, light, temperature, and oxidation processes require highly controlled treatment protocols and special handling. Following extensive R&D, The Mineral Studio has developed internal protocols and customized treatments to achieve the optimal balance between stability and aesthetics.

Conservation principles, long-term stability

Every intervention is carried out according to conservation principles, using professional techniques, carefully selected materials, and a long-term stability-oriented approach, while fully respecting the specimen's original identity.

Repair

When a specimen features detached, fractured, or damaged crystals, each fragment is carefully repositioned according to its original geometry and crystallographic orientation, restoring its relationship with the matrix and preserving the specimen's natural morphology.

High-performance resins, non-yellowing over time, ensure strong, stable, yet discreet bonding. Where necessary, microfractures and small surface losses are also treated to restore visual continuity, while respecting the specimen's original features and structural integrity.

Conservative restoration

Restoration allows the precise reconstruction of missing or damaged portions of a crystal, re-establishing the continuity of its crystal faces and recovering its original geometry and morphology.

It is a highly specialized process, aimed at preserving the authenticity, stability, and historical identity of mineral specimens. Each intervention begins with a careful assessment of the specimen, including the detection of any previous restoration work.

Three axes of conservative restoration

Minimally invasive

From the highlighting to the preservation of existing features.

Material compatibility

Employment of high quality, carefully selected resins, materials, and tools that best suit the specimen.

Reversibility

Restoration is carried out in ways to allow for future interventions, should an amelioration be required.

Custom acrylic bases

Nowadays, acrylic bases are a highly appreciated standard in the highest segment of the exhibition of mineral specimens. They combine elegance, harmony, great stability, safety, and enhancement of aesthetic specimens. By skipping older, temporary, and visually unappealing methods — such as hot glue, blu-tack, and modelling clay — acrylic bases are a literal perpetual socket for the specimen.

The Mineral Studio studies each base with meticulous attention to detail, to get the best display options and — most importantly — the highest visual satisfaction.

Professional mineral photography

At The Mineral Studio, we create high-end mineral photography that combines technical precision and refined visual presentation.

Every specimen has its own character. Our photography is designed to faithfully capture and enhance that identity, revealing the distinctive features that make each specimen unique.

From individual collector pieces to exceptional museum-quality specimens, we approach every photograph with the same attention to detail and commitment to accuracy. The result is a precise and visually compelling representation of the specimen, suitable for professional collections, catalogs, publications, exhibitions, websites, and sales presentations.
